Concrete predictions about the future of the world of data are impossible to make – as with any technical industry, the changes are coming quickly and are often difficult to predict or see coming.

In truth the Sydney and Australian technology landscape is probably a couple of years behind the major hubs of Europe and North America. But looking at those countries slightly in front of us in the race (or journey) we can see the signposting and make intelligent predictions about where the jobs market is heading, and therefore where you begin to make adjustments in your training and career development in order make the most of the opportunities that we suspect are headed your way.

Automation will continue to be a growth area. Using data to make automated predictions and to help shape strategy, whether company wide or within a particular aspect of commercial operations, will continue to be a boom area.

The technology that supports this type of modeling is progressing with every day, so the demand for skilled employees who can shape that technology and work within the evolving mechanics of that technology is going to continue to increase.

It’s difficult to make specific recommendations in terms of the types of technologies you should be mastering, but a holistic knowledge of the industry and the ability to work across different languages will put you in good stead.

The tech behind quality predictive and statistical modeling to help shape business growth and development is also going to continue to be a growth area. Mathematics and statistics backgrounds, and lately proper data science and machine learning degrees, have come to the attention and demand of employers.

If you’re a candidate in the market looking to capitalize on the changes that are going to shape the industry in the coming years, make sure you get the basics right. That may mean heading back to uni, taking some night or part-time courses, or it may mean joining groups and communities who are pushing the envelope and looking to further their knowledge. There is, in such an academic and intellectual world, no substitute for expertise in the basic languages and skills that will shape this fast moving industry.

As this industry begins to develop, as with any new and fast-developing niche, it will be those who jump in early who are at the forefront of the market. Look for the big businesses and emerging tech start ups who are going to be leading the technology development – not only will you be at the forefront of the industry, you’ll be earning valuable years of experience that will set you apart from new starters coming in to the business or from other industries.

A lot of the work you’ll be doing in this space is speculative and innovative – it’s difficult to know precisely where it will land in the coming years, but it’s incredibly exciting to know that you’re at the very pinnacle of an industry that is evolving so quickly and changing the world.

If you want to chat about opportunities in this exciting space, or if you’re a company looking to find a mind that can help shape your business, reach out for a chat today – we’re proud work to work on some of the most exciting and rewarding positions in this space.
