After four amazing years with Motion Recruitment, our colleague Aimee Nolan is setting sail for new challenges. IN her time at the business she’s been a key part of our company journey. Too often in recruitment, recruiters come and go without an appropriate acknowledgement of their contribution and growth, so we wanted to sit down with Aimee and chat to her about the things she’s learned and the fun she’s had!
How long have you been at Motion now? Tell us about your journey…
It’s been an amazing four years since I began my journey in recruitment at Motion! While in my last few weeks of studying my Bachelor of Business at UTS I was invited to an agency recruitment info day and I was really excited and interested by the career growth, earning potential and learnings that agency recruitment could offer a graduate (not to mention it sounded like so much fun). Not long after, I met with Christian and Brian and I really resonated with their vision for the business and the culture so I started at Motion about a week after my last exam. In that time, with the support from the guys, a clear progression plan and the exciting learning curve you’re empowered to take on, I was able to progress quickly to Senior Recruitment Consultant. And then, as the company grew, I grew into a team lead, managing a team of three consultants specialising in recruitment for software development.
Can you remember your first day at Motion?
I remember my first day at Motion was a lot of fun and A LOT of information! Everyone was super friendly and passionate about recruitment, and as a welcome to the company we all went out for a team lunch. They guys also put me through really solid training on both tech and recruitment which was really encouraging as tech recruitment can seem pretty overwhelming when you don’t come from a technical background.
What’s been your favourite part about tech recruitment?
My favourite thing about tech recruitment is getting to talk with so many interesting and talented people from different walks of lives. More specifically with software development having the opportunity to see my candidates and clients projects first-hand, and even cooler when you’re friends are talking about a new app they like and knowing that a candidate you placed built it, or the company is a client of yours.
Also, it’s a really exciting time in the tech scene locally as it growing massively with new products and software launching constantly to make people’s lives easier each day and because of that there’s a lot of opportunity to offer your skills and services to help those companies find that right talent for their teams, or help a candidate land their dream job – the impact potential is huge!
Do you think there’s anything that separates Motion from other recruitment agencies?
Besides the fact that everyone here is an absolute legend, I think what sets Motion apart from other agencies is authenticity – the culture of honesty and genuine passion for recruitment that runs through the organisation. Each consultant is also truly a specialist in their respective area of IT recruitment and they really take the time to understand the company culture and the product or systems functionality, and probe deeper with candidates to get to know them and find out what they want in the next role, so that both parties are equally satisfied and better off in the long run.
Any funny moments or memories you want to share from your time with the company?
It’s hard to pin-point just one funny moment because there are always a lot of laughs happening in the office and banter being thrown around! I have so many great memories from countless end of months and quarter celebrations from going to some of the best restaurants in town, playing laser tag, bowling, axe throwing and more! But one of my favourite memories has to be going to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup with the whole team, and ending the night in classic Motion style at Karaoke!
Any advice for new recruiters or those considering entering the industry?
My advice to new recruiters is to find your own style and flair in your approach to recruitment, and building rapport with candidates and clients. They are all people just like you and that’s who they will want to engage with – not a robot focused on hitting their KPIs. Most importantly – you are at the beginning of your career and will be learning lost of new things so remember that it’s the difficult situations you will face and the mistakes you make that will make you an expert in recruitment. Oh, and don’t be scared to pick up the phone – the person on the other end of the line is a human being just like you so talk to them like it! In regards to technical recruitment don’t be intimidated by the thought of using technical terms when interviewing candidates. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the ins and outs of every single technology, try to look beyond the keywords in potential candidates CVs.
From Brian and Christian, and the whole Motion team – thanks to Aimee for her hardwork and commitment to the business! If you think you might be right for a career in recruitment, reach out today – we’re always looking for future superstars!
